This is the first of a few "Games and Updates to look out for"
It is roughly just a small assessment of some of the work done and released publicly by the devs. Either from a devs crew with a brand new gaming project or an upcoming, long awaited, update to a game we well know and love..

Like you probably have noticed, this edition is about the upcoming 4.2 update for Urban Terror. Considering the impressive work done on the engine to support new effects that will enhance the graphics, the re-work of the player's model animations and new weapons, this will be a major update.

Another great news about this update, is the new anti-cheater system: Passport. Alot of people have decided to stop playing because they considered UrT to be plagued by aimbots, wallhackers, autofire and whatnot.. This new feature to counter those a-holes, might renew the fate of those lost players and bring them back to this great game.




~ New Skins ~








~ New Animations ~

~ New Weapons ~

Here's what i've been able to gather, from the publicly released infos from the devs, concerning the new weapons on 4.2

Magnum 44

FN P90

For this new comer in the submachine guns, it will definitely be fun to watch how it will be brought and tweaked for UrT. Fire rate, spread and upgrades compatible for that new weapon.





Benelli M4 Super 90

We'll be able to play with a new shotgun, it's a nice semi-automatic with 8 shells to shoot before having to reload. From what we can see in the videos, its looks like it can pack a nice punch.

Flash grenade

This will be a new pick among the grenades allready in the game. Unfortunately in the videos we dont see the effects they will have on the players.

We can assume it will be blindness, but for how long and to what degree/opacity? Will there be dis-orientating effects like being gassed from an advance basilisk in tremulous? Would wearing the tac google immune the player from them?

Seem like a uzi is featured in this video below, along side with what appears to be an eventual possibility to dual wield small weapons...







~ New Effects ~

Normal, Bump and Specular Mapping, Global Fog, Depth of Field and Bloom

Those changes will definitely bring the game to more modern standards visually. In other words, people wont have the feeling of playing an 8 to 10 years old game. This will also add some meat on the bone when comes time to compete commercial games for players.

Free, Pretty and cool gameplay Smiling

But have no fear if your rig is old and allready managing urt with a passable fps rate, like mentioned below, all the good new effects can be turned off to accommodate older computer and crappy integrated video card.

Those new effects will also be a big plus to attract experienced mappers and texture artists.

FPS should be better, if graphics cards support VBO, the rest can be turned on and off. Fog is what its called - maybe, I've not tried it yet. It will be possible to turn it off as well. If I remember correctly, fog should be available currently, just maps don't use it often. The new fog just looks better. As everything is customizable, if the new features make it harder to see, they can always be turned off

~ Re-worked maps and new maps ~

~ 2 new Gametypes ~

Last Man Standing (Free For All without respawn) and Jump Training.
Jump training sound very interesting, it will add to the defrag element of the game, especially with some maps designed for jumping challenges.

~ New Anti-Cheat system ~




4.2 will have the new Passport and Anti-Cheat system.

From the infos we can get about it, one part of it would be able to detect the presence of various cheating softwares used by cheaters on UrT. And the other part of this, the passport, would be used somewhat like a powerful identifier, communicating on multi levels, enabling the system to identify and enforce the penalty on the cheaters.

If this prove to be efficient against cheaters, and we hope it does, other games should definitely start looking into it to fix their cheating problems as well.





One thing i couldn't find, was infos if the admin system was gonna be modify or improved. For example if 4.2 would integrate Tony J. White (aka Tjw) admin system, which have proven itself to be very efficient and flexible on game like Tremulous. It give to the server operators the possibility to grade admins and regular players by trust levels and assign specific commands to those levels. A definite plus for managing gaming servers.

Also, no official news on the possibility of Urban Terror 4.2 to be released along with it's code... therefore adding this great game to the list of many fun and open source projects out there.

If i come across more news, i'll try to add them, feel free to add some of your stuff concerning 4.2 if you have any.

The magnum, animations and water effects look Badass with a capital B and no space in between the two words. I'm also very curious to see how the anti-cheat thing works out too. Is our UrT server still up? I haven't played in along time but I'll start again once the update is out.

You can also use them to say 2-4 (24 pack for all the Americans, I don't if you say 2-4 in the USA).

* New Sniper rifle to replace the SR8
* Re-worked Flags with new textures

And other nice feature being presented, like the use of shader, i would guess specular, to add realism to light reflection on weapons.

I didn't play much of it so far, but i made this small video displaying the new weapons and the new map "Cascade"
