Even though this site is focused on free open source games, I still want to share this in the Lounge because I know there are quite a few Xbox gamers and a lot of Windows owners here on obliter8.

Left 4 Dead is game from Valve: creators of games such as Half-Life, Counter Strike, and Team Fortress 2. It comes out tomorrow, November 18th. It will be out for Xbox and Windows.

Over the Weekend I had some free time so I downloaded the Left 4 Dead demo. This game is beyond comparison
. I found myself beating the demo's two levels almost 30 times and the best part is it never felt repetitive and was always challenging. I was apparently not the only one who found the demo amazing. On my friends list, the Left 4 Dead demo was the second most popular game of the weekend only behind the newly released Gears of War 2. This is the first game I have actually want to buy the day it comes out which I have never done before. My expectations for this game were great and they were blown away by the demo. The demo features a two level campaign referred to as "No Mercy" with Xbox live co-op capability.

The gameplay was incredible Valve has in my mind created the best co-op game ever. The game requires players to stick together through various zombie types, which have the ability to disable the mobility of a player and require their teammates to help, and hoards of zombies that a single player is not likely to survive.

The zombies move smoothly and naturally for what you would expect from a zombie, with many models, you never seem to cross the same zombie. Once, I was lucky enough to get a short xbox glitch in the middle of an attack and got a glimpse at a zombie face up close. I shit myself, the detailed scary face of the zombie combined with Valves great use of lighting makes for a horrid scene. Unfortunately you are unable to see this when you have a hoard of zombies charging at you.

When I say hoard I mean around what seems to be 60 zombies charging you from all directions at the same time. Luckily, if you get a headshot with the SMG you can down them in one hit or take the stronger, but slower approach and blow them away with a shotgun. Every zombie moves differently too so you will not be able to down them all in one quick sweep, some will crawl some stumble some sprint straight at you.

If you are downed, you will be on the ground, only able to look around and shoot with a pistol while the zombies continue to attack you. Your friends are able to revive you by holding X by you while you are not being attacked. If you die, which you will, you will be able to be revived later in the level.

Mixed with the regular zombies are special zombies. The hunter is fast, pounces like a goon but if he hits you, he pins you down and gouges out your chest until you die unless a friend comes and knocks him off or kills him. The smoker has a seemingly infinitely long tongue which will grab you, immobilize you, and pull you toward him where he will hack at you unless a friend whacks the tongue off you or preferably kills the smoker. Then there is the boomer who will vomit on you, or if you kill him too closely will explode on you. If either of these happens, his bile or guts will attract a hoard of zombies which you will have to fight off. There are two boss like zombies, The witch, a devilish girl who will sound like a crying child, but don't get too close or shine your light on her for whoever wakes her will be in for a terrible surprise. And last but not least is my least favorite, the tank. The tank is a giant hulk-like creature who will knock you down with one hit. He seems impossible to kill and will require about 5 clips from each player on Expert.

The dynamic spawning system always changes up the gameplay. One time you may find a hoard of zombies outside the first door and lose then next game you go through the level halfway then encounter three hoards. What spawns and where are based on how well you did in the previous life. If you did well, you will not do nearly as well the next time. If you did horribly, you will find the game a little less challenging the next time. I at first was worried this would make the game too easy but I was always challenged no matter how I had done previously.

Ah I am in love with this game. Valve has done it again Laughing out loud I highly recommend getting this game to anyone who owns an Xbox. This description does not do the game justice, you need to experience it for yourself. It is quite an adrenaline rush that will get your heart pumping every time you turn a corner or open a door!

i heard that resistance 2 also has very good co-op, plus its a ps3 exclusive so i guess reisistance is now the halo, gears of war and the left 4 dead of the ps3.
btw, do the sillowhetes of your team members get annoying or distract you? or are they helpful?

Also, you can see what each team mat is doing by their silhouette and it changes colors whether they are immobile and need your assistance.

I just bought the game Laughing out loud

Oh another thing I forgot to mention was the fact that every door is destructible, so if you want to break a hole in the middle of one to shoot out of you can. Also, while they will stall the zombies for a bit, the door will not stop them, they will rip it to pieces. And there are object around the maps you can use to help you or harm you, such as a gas tank you can shoot to start a fire which will kill the zombies, or objects you will try to avoid activating such as a car alarm or they will attract a hoard of zombies. Also, when you are fully healed you move very quickly, but when as you become more and more injured, your movement slows.
