Some of you might have already noticed the banner on the site for OpenGameArt.org, so i thought i'd try to explain what they are about, promote their work a bit and show some of the stuff i contributed there.

To start with, OGA is a site that specialize in free and open source assets for games. Basically, they care about FOSS gaming like us here at Gameboom and they built a site where devs and artists can meet and share assets, to further open source gaming Smiling

The various type of assets available; 2d artwork (sprites, pixel art, icons, textures, etc), 3d models (player models, vehicles, weapons models, etc) and also audio assets (various audio and ambient sounds), all gives from a developer's perspective the ability to create games without struggling to find artwork or audio.

Another neat thing, is that if the artwork isn't allready there, a game developer can always ask if someone would contribute specific assets to his project.

From an artist point of view, the site offer the possibility to contribute numerous type of assets with no strings attached and under the "theme" of the artist choice.. In other words, if someone wants to share 2d sprites of cats drinking tea with the audio of clinking cups and miaous, they can. That freedom coupled with the fact that an artist can contribute anonymously if he wants, is a nice way to encourage more people to give it try and share stuff.

Personally, i shared a bit of artwork to OGA as a way to give back to open source gaming, i've spend a shitload of time playing and being entertained by FOSS games, i thought it would a nice way to contribute.
Figured, some can code and share code, others who can draw share artwork...

First one i shared was part of the "Nature" themed contest, it's a pack of desert like textures called "Drought tiles pack"

Here's roughly the creation process of it;

It originally stopped at the fifth step, with the brownish soil..
But it eventually got alot less brown after someone asked me if i was texturing a turd -.-
cough..cough.. ghost.. cough..

Second contribution, was a new version of the "medals" used on OGA. Not that the ones on OGA are bad, but i tought i could share medals with a bit more "bling" in them Eye-wink

Again, rough creation process of it;

The medal part was originally bigger and was made as a mockup for gameboom's medals, but we didn't go with it..

Third artwork i shared to OpenGameArt.org, was the "Loot pack"
I figured i was allready working with gold and silver stuff from the medals... so why not make coins and treasure like artwork.

Rough creation process for the ring;

Fourth and last one i contributed so far, is the "Dice" artwork, it was part of the "Minimalist" contest.

There's not much to say about it, it's squares with dots and the animated version was pretty fun to do

That's about it, i know for sure that there's a few good artists in Gameboom's community, after all we had a good bunch of people in the old Vids&Graphics group awhile ago...

So i hope to see some of you guys work on OGA someday Smiling

Can you do me a favor and make a standard link button, like the other ones on the bottom of OGA? I'd like to put up a permanent link to here.

Peace,
Bart
