Well, after downloading and installing the FPS game .kkrieger, I went and did a little bit more research on this company, and I found that the authoring application they made for creating it, they also released it for free! It's called .werkkzeug and you can download it from their website at:

http://www.theprodukkt.com/werkkzeug1#25

"The point of .werkkzeug is creating visual data the same way one would do in commercial applications, the only difference being the way of storage — instead of exporting the final image or model into raw pixel or vertex data, .werkkzeug stores the steps that were made to achieve the final result. This allows high resolution textures to be stored on less than one hundred bytes of space. This technique is known as procedural generation."

The reason why I wanted to share this with you all, is this incredible demo which shows off their latest upgrade to this tool, called .werkkzeug3 TE, also free. The demo is called .debris and you can get it at:

http://www.theprodukkt.com/debris

The file is only 177kb! You will need a decent computer to run this demo:

- minimum:
* p4 2ghz or athlon 2000+ (with sse)
* 512mb ram
* ps2.0 capable graphics card with 128mb vram
* directx 9.0c

- recommended:
* core2duo or athlon x2 with >=2.4ghz
* 1024mb ram
* geforce 7600/radeon x1600 or better with 256mb vram

This are some screenshots of the demo, but you have to see it for yourself in action, You won't regret it I promise!

ghostshell @ Thu, 10/30/2008 - 9:05am · #673 wow! that little engine is amazing. looks more like a technology demo, i wonder if they are working on any games using it. looking at those recommended settings, almost looks like all the compression is affecting cpu and memory (maybe?). it looks very promising though.

About 2 years ago I was doing undergraduate research in procedural generation and came across this. It would be interesting to see more games made using nothing but procedural generation. The problem is, it takes a long time to learn the tools, as you have to remake all the art assets from scratch using procedural generation tools because there's currently no good way to take existing art and 'compress' it into procedural art.
