Jedi Outcast is the second game in the Jedi Knight series. You once again play as protagonist, Kyle Katarn. Kyle has put up his lightsaber for a blaster once more, but will he stay like that for long? Blast your way through waves of enemies in either first or third person, chop up your foes in either first of third person, or force your way through if you must.

While not open source, Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story in english) is a platform shoot-em-up in the style of Metroid, Megaman and features some memorable charcters and a nice story. The best part is that this is a complete game, like any commercial game, but it's completely free! There multiple versions for Mac, Windows, Linux, homebrew version for PSP, Xbox and a demo/work in progress for DS.
