Fast-paced gameplay, with many strategic elements. Instead of simply trying to kill as many people as possible, games are won by teams working well together to destroy the enemy base. This makes for a much more interactive game, as opposed to a game such as, say, Halo. The fact that the human and alien classes have completely different styles of gameplay also contributes to this game's unique charm.
Also, I have yet to find another first person shooter where players are allowed to build their own base. Granted, I've not played that many games, but this seems to be a fairly unique feature.
The game can be difficult to pick up if you're a beginner at first person shooters and or real-time strategy games. Since the alien class is so completely different from a normal shooter, someone new to the game will probably find using the mostly projectile-less aliens difficult. Also, many new players tend to know nothing about the way various structures are used in the game, and throw up whatever looks good willy-nilly. This can be absolutely destructive to an efficient game.
All that aside, this is a very enjoyable game with a seemingly neverending replay value. The sense of community and friendship in the game doesn't hurt, either. Highly recommended.

Good summary of the game, and I for one 100% support Halo bashing.
If you like tremulous, take a look at the Half Life mod Natural Selection (on Valve's Steam, because unfortunately nobody is able or wants to host NS on WON anymore), although it's old, and the fact that HL still isn't free or open source; it's similar if not better than tremulous plus it still has an alive development team.
Or you could try Savage: The Battle for Newerth, it's free. Both of these games have a feature that lets players build their own base, although not in first person as in tremulous. Instead the character takes the role of a commander to give orders and build structures in a more RTS top-down perspective, and you are essentially the leader of your team. If you're not very good at this you'll get booted from the game. Both NS and Savage have a steep learning curve.
