This will cover a stand alone Tremulous 1.1.0 installation in windows.

The first step is download and save the installer: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tremulous/tremulous-1.1.0-installer.exe?download

Next, execute the installer by double clicking the tremulous-1.1.0-installer.exe file. This installs the game and sets up the file system for tremulous. After you agree to the license, set up asks where you would like to install. Keep the default location, it will keep things easy down the road in case you need help. Now you select what will be installed: Base install is required, and the Start menu shortcuts is recommended. If you only plan on playing the game, there is no need to select the Tremulous source code option.

Clicking install sets up the game in the following directory: C:\Program Files\Tremulous
Inside that folder there is a number of files including; the Tremulous exe, the game manual, change log, copy of the gpl, and an uninstaller program.

Take a moment to read through the game manual, it provides the basic instructions of game play.

*Tip: I like to create a shortcut on my desktop to the Tremulous.exe for easy location. To do this, right click on the Tremulous.exe (little black dretch)and choose send to desktop(create shortcut)

Double click the Tremulous.exe and the game will start up.
You are at the main menu, select "options", under the "game" tab enter a name for yourself. While there also change Auto Download to "yes". Now select the "system" tab, choose "net and sound", under "network" change the setting to match your type of internet connection.
Next we will get a list of Servers to play on, from the main menu choose "Play"
At the top left of the screen change the source to "internet" and click on "Get new list". The screen should now fill with available online servers.

You are now set up to play Tremulous!

Now let's take look at the file structure.

Installing will create the folder C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base
The base folder is the heart of your game files, all of your maps and settings are stored here.
  • Your personal settings are kept in the file:autogen.cfg
Any time you make changes to settings in the options menu or from the game console they are saved to this file.
Do not mess with this file unless you know what you are doing!

  • Map files are named: map-mapname.pk3
If you want to add more maps than are supplied in the initial installation you have several options:

1)You can turn on auto downloads, (The options tab in the main menu) this will direct your game to a server hosting the map. It will download the map and automatically place it in your base folder. The only draw back to this option is you have to wait for the map to download before you can play.(This option is recommended, because you only store the maps you actually play)

2)You can download single maps, and place them in your base folder. Dretch *Storm maps are here: http://dretchstorm.com/filebrowser/maps (Sometimes this option is faster than auto download, depending on your connection)

3)Or, use a map-pack, which adds many maps not supplied with the installation. To do this you locate a map pack and download it. Then you have to place all of the map.pk3 files into your base folder, if the map pack comes in a .zip form you must unzip it to the base folder.(I prefer not to use a map pack, they often install maps you will not play. This not only takes up space, but can cause problems for you. When playing the game each startup and map change loads all of the shader scripts for every map you have installed, this can make loading take longer and sometimes cause server errors)

  • There are a number of other files in your base folder: a few .pk3 files, and a few .cfg files. Be careful with these other files, tampering with them will mess up your settings or worse render your game unplayable.

  • Using the console (~) command /condump condumpname will place the condump file in your base folder with the name you give it
  • Taking an in game screenshot using the console (~) command /screenshot will create the folder C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base\screenshots and place any screen shots in there. By default screen shots are saved as a .tga file.
  • Recording a demo of your game using the console (~) command /record will create the folder C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base\demos and place your demo files in there. Demos are saved in the .dm_69 file format
* Tip: A handy program to view and manipulate Tremulous files is notepad2, found here:
